Exhibition Text: Hoy si me arregle translates to, "Today I got ready" and it is inspired by Frida Kahlo Self Portrait with a necklace. Hoy si me arregle is a self-portrait about myself where I decided to get ready by doing my hair and adding a little makeup. It shows my Mexican culture by my brown skin, and the braided hair similar to Frida. |

Purpose:
The purpose of yo si Arreglo is to represent a healing purpose. It is documenting the day and time that I decided that it was time to get out of depression and to get ready for a special event but myself. To remind me who I am. To remind me, that I am an independent brown colored woman who has so much ahead and I cant spend my time being sad. That day I got ready, and before COVID i remember I did in-depth research on Frida for my comparative study and I know she painted her reality, whether it was death, suicidal, or heartbreaks. I remember what I was going through at the time, and I was a dark place but I was able to get through it like Frida. This made her a perfect reference for my artwork, so I used two of her artworks as inspiration.
Planning:
My planning consisted of me trying to take a picture that was similar to both pictures. I am not a very photogenic person, so I had to take around 50 pictures, in each setting. I took pictures in different lighting to see which one was more convincing. Also, I couldn't take myself seriously because I wast used to my hair being done like that. Planning was not just the picture, It also involves hair, outfit, and makeup. I couldn't take that picture with straight hair, or a plain t-shirt. I had to show a resemblance to my inspiration. I had to borrow a dress from my older cousin because I don't own any, and the ones I had did not match the style I was going for. Also, my hair was braided back, it took about 10 minutes to do those braids, and a variety of bobby pins, since I'm not used to doing my hair occasionally. The makeup was the hardest part for me because In both artworks Frida does a natural makeup, she enhances her bushy muscles and eyebrows. I don't have that convince, so I decided not to. Also, she enhances her portrait by adding a lot of blush, so I had to try and replicate her makeup.

Experimentation:
- Most of my experimentation came from trying to achieve the correct colors. For example, when it came to getting the right skin tone, it was really hard because I would be too dark,or then to light. At some point, I looked orange. I would have to start over several times because I could not get the right contouring and highlights which was frustrating. I had to figure out a way to make my skin color without wasting too many acrylics since I had a limited supply. My best bet was using foundation, and adding white acrylics to give the same texture, and use the foundation itself as a way to contour.
- Another way I experimented was trying to find a successful method that would allow me to draw myself to my best ability. I did try free-styling it but, the outcome was not a desirable one. Therefore I tried another one, which was printing out the picture, shading the back, and then tracing it. The drawing itself was perfect, it was painting with the acrylic that made me have challenges.
- I also experimented with different hairstyles, makeup, and lighting when it came to trying to have a similar picture like Frida. I had to take several pictures to see which one fitted best.

Reflection:
Overall doing this project was a success because I was able to complete it on time, using very limited resources. Many challenges were faced when trying to complete this project. For example, finding a quiet workspace, where I was able to write about my artwork was difficult considering, libraries, and cafes are closed. And I had to do this in a Mexican household, where peace is too much to ask for. Also, I didn’t have many paintbrushes, or painting to begin with. And when doing swatches, I did not want to waste any paint since I was limited to it. Id says i struggled most with trying to define the face using acrylics and matching skin tones. The pros consist of finding ways, and learning new techniques so that I was able to make this artwork. The experience and not letting small obstacles stop me is what matters.
Act:
Clearly explain how you can identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork:
My inspirations affected my artwork by the purposed assumption of my artwork. Both were dome to show a moment of self-growth.
What is the overall approach (pov) the author (from research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
My author Frida Kahlo painted her artwork to tell a story about her toxic relationship with Diego, or dramatic life events. She wanted the viewers to know her life was like a movie, something was always going on.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
Among my research, I saw and read that Rene style involved using objects in a non-realistic way to provide provoking images.
What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
The central theme around my work was beauty and religion, to show how religion impacted a healing process, to transform myself into a beautiful young brown skin colored girl.
What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
I inferred through my research that Frida Kahlo, artworks were all influenced by her dramatic life events. She would make this clear, by the way, she portrays herself and added small hints in the background using surrealism. She would also write about it, like she said, “She painted her Reality”.
